Characters That Made My Year – Akira Agarkar Yamada (The Twelve Days of Christmas: Day Eleven)
And so we reach the penultimate post in this series, and what better way to mark it than by remembering one of the shows I particularly enjoyed writing about this year – Tsuritama and my favourite character from it, Akira.
Tsuritama was a pretty fun show and I enjoyed writing about it (it being one of the very few shows I managed to cover this year). From its fantastically catchy OP with the brilliant dancing and the eye-catching colour palate and fishing motif, the whole show was just very enjoyable to watch. The central quartet had great chemistry and the side characters were quirky and interesting.
My favourite character was Akira – how could it not be!? Akira caught your attention right from his first appearance -a 25 year old turban wearing, duck carrying weirdo stalking our loveable alien Haru, who even goes as far as transferring into his high school class; Akira was just intriguing. The fact that he was voiced by Tomokazu Sugita didn’t hurt matters either – love that man’s voice!
Akira was fun to watch regardless of what he was doing, but I think the reveal of his being a card-carrying member of the DUCK! secret society was my favourite (popping out of the sand a close second). It’s just the fact that Akira and his lackies are all camped out in a van, digging into curry (well they are Indian, hoorah for stereotypes) while staring at their extensive surveillance network, and then, after a conversation with the top brass of DUCK!, break out the membership cards & ridiculous pose……….loved it.
