Weekly Reflections 03

Weekly Reflections - Yuuko xxxHOLiC Mirror

Few shows didn’t air this week because of the Winter Olympics, which cut down on the glut of shows I watch weekly.  Still it does seem to be the same handful that stand out most for me each week.

Space Dandy - 07Space Dandy – 07

Loved this episode – best one since the zombie episode!  The Wacky Races via Redline feel just hit all the right notes for me.  Plus that ending was just absolutely inspired – when Space Dandy is good, it is superb.

Kill la Kill - 19Kill la Kill – 19

Was not expecting to go right into a one month timeskip after the cliffhanger ending last week – but it worked exceptionally well.  Seeing the Elite Four fit right in with the Nudist Beach group was entertaining (as was seeing how impressed Mako’s mother was with Mikisugi’s wonderous glowing crotch).  But what I loved most about this episode was the Gamagori x Mako shipping finally being acknowledged in-show – it is always glorious when that happens.

Ryuuko’s rejection of Senketsu after all they’ve been though together was a bit of a downer – especially given how fecking moe Senketsu is at the moment – he looked heartbroken by Ryuuko’s reaction!  I doubt it will last long, someone is bound to slap some sense into Ryuuko soon (probably Mako, usually is) and the team will be back and even stronger in time for the push towards the finale.

Noragami - 07Noragami – 07

Yukine has gone from adorable to brat in the blink of an eye – something of an achievement.  Sure Yato doesn’t much help matters by not really explaining much about his past or what Regalia truly are and what is expected of them to the child, but Yukine’s actions are still petulant and bratty at best and criminal at worst (seriously, stealing a charity box!?).  Hiyori doesn’t help much by pampering Yukine, which just enables his bad behaviour – what he really needs is boundaries and a clear idea of the situation he’s in.  Yato really needs to talk to Yukine properly if he wants him to be a true partner as his Regalia.

Speaking of Regalia – Bishamon sure has a whole team of them, but her megane FukuJun one (Kazuma – who is basically Okamura Yukio from Ao no Exorcist) is the only one granted much screen time due to his mysterious tie with Yato.  Kazuma’s worry for Yato’s health and his statement that he owes Yato a great deal is very interesting – wonder just what the story is there, especially since Bishamon is hell-bent on killing Yato.  And yes, I am definitely shipping Yato with Kazuma right now!

Hamatora - 07Hamatora – 07

Haven’t been much enamoured of Hamatora – it has plenty of things I quite like, but just fails to put them together with much enthusiasm.  Plus the animation quality can be stupidly awful at times.  This episode stands out because it was basically one long luminous red death flag for Art.  I was really hoping that it turned out to be a red herring, because Art is the only character I actually like to any degree in the show……but no.  I’m pretty sure he’s not coming back from multiple gunshot wound and being stabbed in the chest.

So I imagine the rest of the show will be spent trying to avenge Art’s death and showing just why Nice is considered such a powerful Minimum holder.  We haven’t really seen much evidence of Nice’s superhuman powers so far, other Minimum holders seem just as powerful as him, so I’m wondering if they are ever going to explain just what puts Nice on a different level.  Not that I care too much, but I’ve stuck the show out so far, so I’d like some sort of justification!

Hunter X Hunter - 117Hunter x Hunter – 117

“Three minutes have passed since the mission started”.  Yes the time scale in Hunter x Hunter is ludicrously stretched, but there is just so much going on all at the same time that is is easy to see how so short a time has passed.  We already know that characters in this show move and think at lightning quick speeds….although only 3mins since they entered the palace is a bit ridiculous really.

I loved Knuckle and Shoot in this episode.  They know what the best thing to do as far as the mission goes, and yet their wounded pride and friendship makes them do something that could be suicidal given Youpi’s newly discovered explosion powers.  It is fitting that simple-minded Youpi can now literally explode with rage – nen really does work with the users personality.

“Kazuma – who is basically Okamura Yukio from Ao no Exorcist” Hah, so glad I wasn’t the only one who was thinking that. XD

I think that was the first thought for a lot of people based on character design alone – FukuJun doing the voice work for both doesn’t really help matters!

I refused to watch Hamatora when I found out it was not a sequel to Hamtaro, and in fact did not involve hamsters of any kind.

IMHO, Kill la Kill! was mostly pretty cosy. The tiny bit of angst was counterbalanced by the fact that everyone was alive and not starving to death or dying of horrible post-apocalyptic diseases.

Noragami impresses me. I think the characters are very plausible.

Hunter X Hunter is very strong. IMHO many superhero comic-books have horrible writing. Hunter X Hunter does whatever it takes to build up the story, the world, and the characters to the point where superpowers become believable.

Hamsters may have made the show more entertaining……..

Kill la Kill has been remarkably upbeat throughout, it could have easily gone full blown dark and angsty, but has successfully steered well clear of that territory thanks to its overall light tone and preference for comedy.

I will admit to being particularly taken with Noragami because it is one of the prettiest shows I’ve seen……and I’m shallow.

HxH’s writing and characterisation has always been its main strength – the attention to detail is what sets it apart from other shounen series. Fantastic show.
