December 17, 2009

Another season is upon us…….unfortunately Winter 2010 is leaving me distinctly underwhelmed at the moment :S  Stupid amount of boobs and fanservice going on.  Meh onto the prev iew.

Third anime in the ‘Haruka -Beyond the Stream of Time-‘ series and is the second franchise in KOEI’s popular Neoromance line of games for female gamers. (The other Neoromance franchises are Angelique and La Corda D’Oro.)
Akane Motomiya and her friends Tenma and Shimon are pulled by a demon into another world, where Akane becomes the Priestess of the Dragon God. The people of this world tell her that she is the only one who can stop the demons from taking over; meanwhile, the demons want to use her power for their own ends. Luckily, Akane has the Hachiyou, eight men with powers of their own who are sworn to protect the Dragon Priestess.

Hello reverse harem! Never heard of this series before, but the plot sounds suspiciously similar to Fushigi Yuugi – it even comes complete with a cast of multi-coloured bishies! Woo Pretty! Maybe one day when I have a craving for said multi-coloured bishies I’ll try this show out, but its unlikely Passing.

2. Chu-Bra!!

Website: http://www.starchild.co.jp/special/chuubra/

PV: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=raXlYYSI-wE

Summary
Adaptation of the manga by Yumi Nakata.
The story centers on Nayu, a middle school girl who shocks her schoolmates on the first day of school by wearing black lace panties. She likes this kind of underwear, and she tries to “spread the word on the merits of these kinds of underwear” via an underwear club with her schoolmates, who are worried about their bodies’ development and which underwear to choose.

Sweet god, they’re not even attempting to be subtle anymore…….thank you Queens Blade – you’ve opened the floodgates Yeah this looks like pure unadulterated crap, I so don’t want to know about young girls knickers!!!! Shall review the 1st episode in my typical ‘unbiased’ manner though

3. So.Ra.No.Wo.To (Sound of the Skies)

Website: http://www.sorawoto.com/
Japanese Air Date: 4th January 2010
Animation Company: A1 Pictures (Birdy the Mighty Decode, Kuroshi~tsuji)
Seiyuu: Juri Aikawa, Aoi Yūki, Aya Endo, Yu Kobayashi
Number of Episodes: 13
PV: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jIm3YQgxYuY

Summary
Original work by Aniplex, series composition by Hiroyuki Yoshino (Mai-Hime, Mai-Otome, Macross Frontier).
The story is set in the future on a land that, after being scarred by long-lasting wars, has settled into quiet decline. The protagonist is Kanata Kumika, a 15-year-old girl who fulfills her dream of enlisting in the army and joins a unit of five girls who protect a fortress. The girls also play music that reverberate across the skies over towns without people and seas without fish.

Meh. Just when I thought we had got rid of K-ON! a clone shows up Seriously, these character designs just scream K-ON! and this isn’t even KyoAni so we can’t blame their laziness! Blatant rip-off, this seems to be K-ON! meets Strike Witches…….considering I didn’t like either of those shows I doubt I’ll like this. Will sample the 1st episode and attempt to get past my bias, but really not expecting anything from this

4. Seikon no Qwaser (Qwaser of Stigmata)

Website: http://www.qwaser.jp/
Japanese Air Date: 11th January 2010
Animation Company: Taki Corporation (Godannar, Sonic the Hedgehog: The Movie)
Seiyuu: Yuko Sanpei, Toru Ohkawa, Ai Shimizu, Aki Toyosaki, Aya Hirano
Number of Episodes: 24
PV: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D-pjb3cHKxo

Summary
Adaptation of Hiroyuki Yoshino and Kenetsu Satou’s manga.
The mature supernatural action story follows the students of the privately-run St. Mikhailov Academy — in particular, a boy named Aleksander who is a qwaser, or a manipulator of the element of iron. The story is known for its heavy emphasis on fan service, especially with breast milk as a plot device.

Did I read that right!? Breast milk as a plot device!? Blah, I thought this sounded decent and the promo pic looked interesting and it has a pretty decent cast…..but do not know if want a fanservice heavy series, ANN has the manga tagged as mature too Looking at the PV isn’t inspiring me with confidence either – so many fecking boobs . Seriously, what is with the heavy ecchi series this season? Suppose in this economic climate, sex sells

5. Masuda Kousuke Gekijou Gag Manga Biyori +

Website: http://www.kids-station.com/minisite/gyagumanga/
Japanese Air Date: 4th January 2010
Animation Company: Artland (Happiness, Mushishi)
Seiyuu: Kaori Nazuka, Masashi Yabe
Number of Episodes:
PV:

Summary

Fourth adaptation of Kousuke Masuda’s manga.
Gyagu Manga Biyori is hyperactive, random, and nonsensical, revolving around various plots and characters throughout the series. It makes absolutely no sense.

Yes this is the entire summary. No I won’t be watching this.

6. Ladies Vs Butlers!

Website: http://www.ladies-vs-butlers.com/
Japanese Air Date: 5th January 2010
Animation Company: XEBEC (Bottle Fairy, Pandora Hearts)
Seiyuu: Ayako Kawasumi, Kazuyuki Okitsu, Ami Koshimizu, Rie Kugimiya
Number of Episodes: 12
PV: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5_Tj0ZZcx3s

Summary
Adaptation of the light novel by Tsukasa Kozuki
The school romantic comedy revolves around Akiharu Hino, an ordinary high school student who unfortunately looks like a juvenile delinquent. He enrolls into an academy that was once a school for upper-class ladies, and he is placed in the school’s newly established servant training department. The students there are raised to be either maids or butlers, and Akiharu finds himself in the middle of the bickering cliques.

Oh shoot me now! What the hell is this?? Such hideous character designs ( is up with that blonde’s drill-hair!?? ), such pointless fanservice and such a mundane pointless premise! Watching the PV made me I dread to think what will happen when I watch the actual episode………my god this season sucks balls

7. Omamori Himari (Protective Charm Himari)

Website: http://newtype.kadocomic.jp/omahima/
Japanese Air Date: 6th January 2010
Animation Company: ZEXCS ( D.C. ~Da Capo~, Wagaya no Oinarisama)
Seiyuu: Ami Koshimizu, Daisuke Hirakawa, Asuka Okame
Number of Episodes: 12
PV: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-8t63UV78m0

Summary
Based on the manga by Matra Milan.
The slapstick romantic comedy centers around an ordinary 16-year-old high school boy named Yūto Amakawa who is protected by a spirit — specifically, a beautiful, sword-wielding cat girl spirit named Himari. Yūto is descended from a family that has subjugated demons since time immemorial. The charm that once protected him is now impotent, but fortunately, at that same moment, Himari appears before him as his new guardian.

Ah feck. More bloody boobs – half the PV is taken up by boobs! Boring premise and generic art, the only thing this has going for it is the voice cast. So going to have next to nothing to watch next season

8. Baka to Test to Shoukanjuu (The Idiot, Test and Summoned Beast)

Website: http://www.bakatest.com/
Japanese Air Date: 6th January 2010
Animation Company: Silver Link (Tayutama: Kiss on my Deity)
Seiyuu: Hiro Shimono, Emiri Katou, Tatsuhisa Suzuki, Hitomi Harada
Number of Episodes: 13
PV: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KNDnu5R1htc

Summary
Based on the light novel series by Kenji Inoue.
The story centers around a boy named Akihisa Yoshii also known as the idiot or the baka of the title. He attends an academy where they rigidly divide the student body based on the result of the tests taken. Students summon beings that are used for battles and wars between the classes, with their power based on the students’ scores or grades. On the day of the placement test, a smart girl named Mizuki Himeji had a fever and couldn’t complete her test and was pigeonholed into the F class. Akihisa, who pitied her, pitched an idea to his class to rule over the higher level classes by doing a summoned being wars for both Mizuki’s sake and to get more and more prestigious items.

Sounds and looks ridiculous, but just may be worth a look. Feel the need for a decent comedy, and this doesn’t seem to have the same amount of OTT fanservice the other shows look to have. Going to give this a go – voice cast, at the very least, is excellent and the artwork really isn’t completely terrible……although really not sure about those fairy thingys

9. Dance in the Vampire Bund

Website: http://www.vampirebund.com/
Japanese Air Date: 7th January 2010
Animation Company: SHAFT (Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei, ef: A Tale of Memories)
Seiyuu: Aoi Yūki, Yuuichi Nakamura, Yu Kobayashi
Number of Episodes: 12
PV:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PwZlzA05JLU

Summary
Based on the manga by Nozomu Tamaki.
The story revolves around Mina Tepes, princess-ruler of all vampires, and her “protector,” Akira. Like other vampires, Mina has been in hiding with her people for many years. Seeking to end centuries of isolation, Mina gains permission to create a special district for vampires, “The Bund”, off the coast of Japan by paying off the national debt of the Japanese government. Mina then reveals to the world the existence of vampires and her desire for both races to live together. Tensions, however, run high as fearful humans and extremist vampire factions begin to interfere with Mina’s wish for peace with the human world.

Loli Vampire with a dislike for clothing it seems…….hmmm, suppose thats one way to keep your lolicons happy without resorting to underage children . Not keen on the loli vampire part of things, but very keen on SHAFT & Shinbo so will be giving this a go. Plot sounds interesting, but I’ve heard there are some bits of the manga that aren’t really TV friendly so wonder how they’ll get round that. PV looks very promising gore-wise, I do like a bit of violence and action and Vampire Bund seems to have plenty of that – checking out.

10. Durarara!!

Website: http://www.durarara.com/Japanese

Air Date: 7th January 2010
Animation Company: Brains Base (Kure-nai, Natsume Yuujinchou)
Seiyuu: Toshiyuki Toyonaga, Ayahi Takagaki, Daisuke Ono, Hiroshi Kamiya, Jun Fukuyama
Number of Episodes: 12
PV: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0YVNwzhaR78

Summary
Based on the light novel series by Ryogo Narita (Baccano!).
Ryuugamine Mikado is a boy who longs for the exciting life of the big city. At the invitation of his childhood friend Masaomi, he transfers to a school in Ikebukuro. Masaomi has warned him about people he doesn’t want to cross in the city: a champion fighter, an informant, and a mysterious gang called “Darazu.” Nervous from Masaomi’s stories, Mikado witnesses an urban legend on his first day in the city, the Headless Rider astride a black motorcycle. From then on, the existence of supernatural cases and a gang called the Yellow Turbans will rise to the surface, and Ikebukuro will pushed to the breaking point.

Yay!! Finally something I actually want to watch! Artwork seems to be from the same artist as Yozakura Quartet – terrible series, but I liked the art. The original novel is from the same author as Baccano! so since I loved Baccano! I have high hopes for Durarara! Voice cast is drool worthy for my Inner Fangirl, will be watching this to hear some of my favourites talk! PV looks promising too, although the music is slightly dire. Yeap – looking forward to this

Havent seen any of the previous series, and don’t really have any intention of doing so

12. Ookamikakushi

Japanese Air Date: 7th January 2010
Animation Company: AIC (Pumpkin Scissors, Nyan Koi!)
Seiyuu: Yu Kobayashi, Emiri Katou, Yuko Goto
Number of Episodes: 12

Summary
Based on the mystery novel PSP game by Konami which was directed by Ryukishi07 (Higurashi & Umineko)and with character design by Peach-Pit (Zombie-Loan, Rozen Maiden).
A 16 year old boy, Hiroshi Kuzumi, has recently moved into a new town in the mountains. The town is separated into new and old streets by the river, and many mysterious local cultures still remain. Although confused and enjoying his new life, one person kept her distance from him: class committee member Kushinada Nemura. In their few encounters she gave him a word of advice: “Stay away from the old streets”

Intrigued by this, a good mystery series is always welcome. Really like Peach-Pit’s character designs and I know Ryukishi07 can write a good mystery from watching Higurashi (we’ll ignore the awfulness of the Umineko anime), so this seems to have a very solid base. This is another one I’m going to give a fair go – hope it delivers.

13. Hanamaru Kindergarten

Website: http://www.starchild.co.jp/special/hanamaru/
Japanese Air Date: 10th January 2010
Animation Company: Gainax (Tengen Toppa Gurren-Lagann, Kare Kano)

Summary
Based on the manga by Yuto.
Anzu goes to a preschool with her friends, the shy Koume and the eccentric Hiiragi. Together they try to attract attention from their caretaker Tsuchida. However, he is clearly more interested in the pretty Yamamoto who supervises the class next door.

No. No way, no how, not a chance. Hell will have to be experiencing a white Christmas before I even consider watching this! I do not care if its Gainax, creepy little lolis with their horrible squeaky voices freak me right the hell out! God No!

14. Nodame Cantabile Finale

Website: http://www.nodame-anime.com/
Japanese Air Date: 14th January 2010
Animation Company: JC Staff (Azumanga Daioh, Shakugan no Shana)
Seiyuu: Ayako Kawasumi, Tomokazu Seki, Masaya Matsukaze
Number of Episodes: 11
PV: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gL5m8O_vltc

Summary
Third and final season adaptation of the manga by Tomoko Ninomiya.
At a top music academy in Japan, Shinichi Chiaki’s arrogance is matched only by his top-notch piano playing. But when Chiaki and the teacher get into a fight, he’s demoted to the reject class. Chiaki is left to pursue his dream of being a conductor while surrounded by a bunch of loser musicians and one annoying girl, Noda, who has proclaimed herself Chiaki’s girlfriend. It doesn’t help that Noda, who insists on being called Nodame, lives right next door to him. (Summary from season 1)

Definitely, definitely, definitely watching this! Nodame Cantabile is a brilliant series and I’ve loved both the previous seasons – cannot wait to see this finale!

15. Katanagatari

Website: http://www.katanagatari.com/
Japanese Air Date: 25th January 2010
Animation Company: White Fox (Tears to Tiara)
Seiyuu: Yoshimasa Hosoya, Chihiro Suzuki, Masako Ikeda
Number of Episodes: 12
PV: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H6-ilMf3EzI

Summary
Adaptation of light novel by NisiOisin (Bakemonogatari)
A swordfight story taking place in Edo era (17th – 19th century). Yasuri Shichika is the seventh head of the Kyotou school of Japanese sword martial arts and lives in Fushou Island with his sister Nanami. With the order from a female samurai general Togame, he sets out for a trip to collect the twelve treasured swords created by a legendary swordsmith Shikizaki Kiki.

Do want! Love the unusual and original looking artwork – the colours are vibrant and striking (really liking the website and all the pictures), plus the story is by NisiOisin – what more could I want!? White Fox are a fledgling studio and I couldn’t stick Tears to Tiara out to the end – however I did like their animation work on that show, just wasn’t fussed on the storyline. Katanagatari on the other hand appeals to me – I like the edo setting and premise a lot. Yeap quite excited about this

So thats, that! As ever keep an eye on the Fansub Wiki for information who subs what. I’ll be reviewing the 1st episodes of most shows – look out for them in the New Year!

The only positive thing I can really say about this season is that because so much of it looks like crap in a bag, I’ll have much more time to catch up on some shows I have had sitting on my HDD for months!

1st up will be Monster and Hikaru no Go……then I should really watch Lain and Princess Tutu 😀 Need to resume One Piece as well actually.
