Winter 2010 – First Impressions (Ladies Vs Butlers, Baka to Test to Shoukanjuu and Dance in the Vampire Bund)

January 7, 2010

Three more series up today – really mixed bag too 🙂

Ladies Vs Butlers!

Seriously. What the hell did I just watch? This was horrendous – an exercise in seeing just how many clichés you can fit into a single episode! In all seriousness it was like they had a round table discussion, complied a list and just had the main character run about assult everything in a skirt and check things off said list! The set up kind of reminds me of Princess Lover, but without the likeable cast

Animation is fairly decent surprisingly – the backgrounds are actually really nice……still hate the character designs. Blonde drill hair is even more ridiculous looking animated than in the promo pics There is also a decent cast on board which makes this all the more tragic really. Fanservice is rife – I watched the censored version (which suffered from half the screen being whited out – yay subtle ), but Random Curiosity has caps from the uncensored broadcast……..which is filled with nudity and boobs unsurprisingly.

OP was a genric seiyuu number – not terrible, not great. ED was dull ballad with uninteresting static pictures BGM is passable.

No way am I watching anymore of this rubbish – pass me the brain bleach.

Baka to Test to Shoukanjuu (The Idiot, Test and Summoned Beast)

Wow what a fun 1st episode! Very entertaining, filled with cliche’s but well written and actually made me laugh! I didnt have very high hopes for this, but very pleasantly surprised by this 1st episode. The premise is every bit as ridiculous as the summary made it out to be, but the script is so well written that somehow it just works. All the usual high school cliche’s are present and accounted for, but they’re parodied and played up in a very amusing way – if they keep up this level of witty scripting this could be a comedy to look out for!

When I opened the file and let the 1st few minutes play, I had to pause it to double check who the animation studio was because this just has SHAFT written all over it……except its not SHAFT, its Silver Link! Acutually went and looked at the staff listing after finishing the episode and discovered quite a few key members and the director actually were from SHAFT so that explains the SHAFT vibes The animation is great, its got that quirky feel SHAFT usually employ with the patterns, writing on the blackboard, animation shifts and quick cuts – however its not all copied style and the show comes into its own during the summoned creature battles. This was fantastically well put together, just hope they maintain this high standard throughout!

Voice acting was great – its a good cast and the fact there is a decent script means they are at their best here. Music is also pretty damn good surprisingly! I liked the OP, but the ED is even better (especially liked the art in the ED).

definitely keeping this on for a few episodes to see if it keeps up the energy – will be a series to look out for if it suceeds.

Dance in the Vampire Bund

I don’t know what I was expecting, but this wasnt it. An intriguing way to start a series, I had to double check I had the right file a few minutes in – SHAFT and Shinbo really do have to do something different all the time. The show runs like its an episode of a TV special discussing the existence of Vampires – as such the actual main characters only get very minor cameo’s towards the end. Its a very strange way to start of a short series, not really the best use of time but interesting none the less. The rough makeup of vampire society is established and we do get to see Mina in action so its not a complete waste of an episode, but its very difficult to judge what the rest of the series will be like based on this first episode.

Animation is excellent – we’re not getting all of the quirkiness I’ve come to expect from SHAFT and Shinbo, although direction choices and camera angles do still maintain that off center feeling. Character designs are great and there is lots of detailing – the brief action sequence is also well done and the blood is present….high hopes for the gore factor in later episodes.

As I said the main characters only get a cameo appearence in this episode so can’t really comment on the voice acting – seems like it will be solid enough though. No OP this week and ED was a pretty standard number (doesnt help that the only art during the ED was a picture of Mina in her underwear ) – did like the BGM though.

So difficult to judge where this show is going to go based on this unusual 1st episode, but will keep it on for a few episodes to see what happens.

@Atherilia: She really doesnt – not in ep 1 anyway. Its mostly focused on the chat show, Mina just cameo’s. She’s much more central in ep2, although Akira mostly has the limelight there.
