Autumn 2010 – First Impressions (Otome Youkai Zakuro & Yosuga no Sora)

October 5, 2010

So another evening, another couple of new shows to review.  Today its the oh so shoujo Otome Youkai Zakuro and the incest eroge adaptation Yosuga no Sora – I watch these things so you don’t have to!

Otome Youkai Zakuro

JC Staff seem to be picking up where Maid-sama left off last season with this show – its extremely shoujo, but this 1st episode was pretty entertaining. I’ve seen plenty of people drawing parallels to Ouran High School Host Club, and its pretty obvious why – the three bishies in this look like they’ve been imported directly from that series, vacuum packed in bishie sparkles and roses! Still I did like the characters, the youkai girls are all pretty cute and Zakuro is definitely not a damsel in distress (although she is pretty much a typical tsundere). It was Agemaki’s antics that provided most of the fun though – a Tamaki clone in every sense, he can turn on the bishie sparkles and summon roses from nowhere at the flick of a switch, but is really a complete wuss and terrified of anything to do with youkai.

The animation is very pink and oh so shoujo, but decent enough – nothing really exciting. I did like how they did the action scene at the very start of the episode (and there was blood! Blood in my generic shoujo!) and if they pull out a few more scenes like that the show may be pretty interesting. The music is fairly bland, wasn’t much fussed on the OP or ED. Voice acting is good – liked Takahiro Sakurai’s Agemaki and Mai Nakamura’s Zakuro a lot.

So Otome Youkai Zakuro’s 1st episode was much better than I expected, but I can’t really see this being a must see. I might marathon it at a later stage if it seems good, but for now I’m dropping it – I’ll already have one supernatural historical series full of bishies on the watching list once Hakuouki 2 appears, and even though its much more sedate, it’s also got nicer character designs and a lot less pink!

Yosuga no Sora

Well that was an utter carcrash of an episode, definitely sticking to its eroge source anyway! This episode in a nutshell – orphaned twins move to village in backside of nowhere where boy twin promptly makes half the female population of haremette stereotypes fall for him merely by walking about and being pleasant bland. Meanwhile moody sick-girl twin sulks about lack of internet and has fantasies about sticking her tongue down her brother’s throat and generally behaves like classic ‘jealous clingy girl’, before finally waking him up in the middle of the night by stripping – sensing yandere tendencies in addition to completely unsubtle incest vibes. And that’s just the main episode! We then have a random omake with the oujo-san character’s maid discussing her woeful lovelife, which ends with her masturbating alone in her room…….oh yeah, this show is just that classy. Although this little segment was probably more fun than the rest of the episode put together!

In terms of animation, it’s actually a very nice looking series – the character designs may be uber generic, but they’re nicely animated and there’s some nice expressions – also there is nudity with actual nipples. The music is also quite nice and I liked the OP. There seemed to be two EDs – one was the expected generic ballad and character slideshow, the other was a comedy fanservice thing that was pretty fun. Voice acting is ok – full of the usual haremette voices.

This episode was so bad I couldn’t look away – they’re definitely not going for subtlety anyway. I think this show would only be worth watching if I was promised some yandere stabby stabby-ness, otherwise its just squicky incest and your typical harem setup (seriously, Haru must be emitting some ridiculously powerful pheromones!) – avoiding!

I guess I had low expectations for Otome Youkai Zakuro, but I ended up pleasantly surprised. Kind of like skipping lunch and eating a bag of popcorn instead. It was fun while it lasted, but you can’t do that everyday, or you’ll end up making yourself sick.

I had pretty low expectations too, and was pleasantly surprised that the 1st episode was as good as it was. Still doubt it could maintain that level in the long run.

Enjoyed the characters in Otome Youkai Zakuro, couldn’t have cared less for the battle’ish segment what so ever. Probably a good show to watch on the side.

Didn’t loath Super Duper Twin Incest show as much as you did … there’s definitely worse this season …

I think Zakuro may be a show to marathon at some stage – although it all depends on whether it stays interesting.

I hate eroge adaptations and incest storylines as a knee-jerk reaction – they just get on my nerves something serious.
