Autumn 2010 – First Impressions (Toaru Majutsu no Index II)
A week into the new season and the end of these First Impressions posts is in sight! Today we have Toaru Majustu no Index II.
Toaru Majutsu no Index II (A Certain Magical Index 2)
Its like Index has never been away! They’ve decided to just jump right back into the everyday life of Touma and Index, and as such this episode had everything you’d expect from a typical episode of Index. Its got Touma snowed under by homework & complaining about his misfortune, Index demanding food/attention, Index getting kidnapped so someone can read the magical books in her head, Touma running about like a headless chicken, Mikoto being tsundere and alternating between blushing & attempting to give Touma her phone number and trying to fry him with her Biribiri-ness, Touma giving his traditional heroic speech and then Imagine Breaking the crap out of everything and the usual slightly jarring level of bloody violence. Quite a few of the side characters get a cameo too and there was a scene with Kaori taking care of a load of armour clad knights which seems to hint that there will be a plot incoming soon.
The production values have been racked up a notch, it’s a really fantastic looking show (even if I don’t particularly care for the character designs much), and I was glad to see they’ve kept the blood in. There was some pretty nice direction in this episode too, which is promising. Voice cast are back in all their whiney glory (I never could stand Index and my issues with Abe’s grating voice seem to stem from Touma), as is the majority of the original soundtrack. I really liked the OP song (the animation was a touch uninspired) and I quite liked the ED too (animation seems to suggest that the Railgun characters will be crossing over into this series……please don’t let there be too much Kuroko!). So no qualms about the production at all.
So a decent return for Index, however it remains to be seen if they can fix the issues the 1st season had – namely poor pacing and lack of continuity. I still don’t much like Index (she irritates me to no end) and Touma still has that irritating hero complex (although I do like his snarky comments), but the side characters are fun so I’m hoping they get more development. I’ll be sticking with this 2nd series, if nothing else its very visually attractive and has some great action scenes.
