Characters that made my year – Cell (12 Days of Christmas – Day 3)
Another day, another character who made 2010 a better year in anime for me. On the third day of Christmas, let us honor Cell from Dragon Ball: Kai!
So yeah, a slight bit of cheating but since Dragon Ball: Kai is currently airing I have a valid excuse for including Cell on this list! I had completely forgotten that Cell was voiced by the brilliant Norio Wakamoto – I had a complete fangasm when I realised this when Cell made his glorious arrival into the series during episode 69. Wakamoto’s vocal performance is just amazing – they way he rolls words round before spitting them out with gusto added a whole new dimension to Cell’s character.
However the moment I’ve picked to demonstrate how ridiculously powerful, and entertaining Cell is, is from the recently aired episode 83, where Cell, in his perfect form, hijacks a TV station to broadcast his intention to hold the Cell Games. Waltzing in through the front door, he politely asks the receptionist where the studio with worldwide broadcast capabilities is, and once directed to the upper floors, calmly proceeds directly up through the ceiling passing through multiple channels before arriving at his destination. It’s a hilarious scene, but we’re quickly reminded of how powerful and heartless Cell is when he blasts directly through the wall and wipes out half the city as a demonstration of what he’s capable of. Cell is all at once highly entertaining, and loathsome – this is why he’s such a great antagonist and why I’m thankful to be reliving the joy of the Cell arc in Dragon Ball Kai.
