Characters that made my year – Hideyoshi Kinoshita (12 Days of Christmas: Day 8)

December 21, 2010

From a series that was one of my first tentative steps into the world of episodic blogging, comes a character that spawned an entirely new gender!  On the eighth Day of Christmas, let us be confused by the wonder that is Hideyoshi Kinoshita from Baka to Test to Shoukanjuu.

BakaTest was a lot of fun, but without doubt the best thing that series gave us was the Traptastic Hideyoshi.  Hideyoshi doesn’t particularly act like a girl, and he even wears the boys uniform – however he still has legions of male admirers in the show, and inevitably ends up in some sort of girly clothing most episodes.  The most amusing thing about Hideyoshi is that there is actually a female version of him in the school – his twin sister; yet Hideyoshi is massively more popular than she is and is actually prettier than her when in Trap-mode (which is an achievement since they’re nearly identical)!  I loved how utterly clueless Hideyoshi could be, he’s pretty dense when it comes to his crossdressing antics – fully believing sales people & friends alike when they recommend pretty female clothing and cosplay outfits for him……..there is a reason why he’s in the F class, clearly his sister got all the brains!

Hideyoshi’s best moment comes in episode 6 of the series.  When trying to get changed for the pool, Hideyoshi attempts to follow the boys but is stopped and directed to a separate changing room simply labeled ‘Hideyoshi’.  The fact that this separate changing/bathing area caught on outside the school was the most amusing part of the episode, as when the crew head to the public bathhouse there is the ‘Hideyoshi’ area sandwiched between the ‘Male’ and ‘Female’ areas!  I got a lot of entertainment value out of Hideyoshi’s Trappiness, he’s a pretty shallow character on the whole, but the endless cosplay and Trap-service were part of what made BakaTest so much fun for me.

I actually had a draft written about Hideyoshi that I never published. Maybe I should?

Ah yes, Hideyoshi was truly what is known as a legendary trap. The bathhouse gag was comedy gold.

I really loved that bathhouse gag – nice to see the Hideyoshi love expanding beyond the school grounds

I have to agree with you. Hideyoshi’s character is not exactly big or important to the story but somehow managed to stand out every time he’s on screen🙂

I read about Hideyoshi being a trap, my mind flew to Hyouge Mono’s Toyotomi Hideyoshi, and…

    …ugh.
