Level E – 04

February 1, 2011

Level E continues to impress – this weeks episode was once again completely different to what I was expecting, a complete change in direction & artstyle for the most part…….but it I got the rug pulled out from under me once again!!

I was quite impressed by Blondie’s story, it felt like it could have been an episode of the X-Files!  I was sitting watching and trying to figure out what the link to the previous arc would be, as I fully expected some sort of twist, however I thought it would be along the lines that the creepy doctor was working with Prince Baka or that the four boys were acquainted with Yukitaka or something like that.  Instead it turned out that this entire tale of women eating aliens was fabricated by Prince Baka & turned into a mini movie!

In hindsight I should have suspected that this was either a fabrication or some sort of flashback as the grainy artstyle evoked that kind of feeling.  However I was really impressed by the direction and atmosphere – the drama was pretty spot on too.  In just a single episode the new characters were nicely fleshed out and the plot had an interesting slant to it.  I genuinely felt for the alien’s who had to eat their women to reproduce and couldn’t resist that urge even though they developed feelings for them.  On reflection it was quite a dick move of Prince Baka to try to cash in on the plight of an alien race he’s acquainted with!

So Level E continues to impress me.  I really love the writing in this show and how it can still surprise me even though I am now half expecting to be trolled!  Next week looks to be dealing with an alien pretending to be a teacher, and seems to also have something to do with Blondie’s sentai brainstorming session at the end of this episode.  Really looking forward to next week – wonder what Level E will do next?

I was mostly thrown off in the episode by “eat the women to reproduce”. That just got a giant “Whoa!” out of me, haha. But the episode on the whole didn’t impress me as much as episode 3 did.

Episode three was better, but ep4 still blind-sided me. Very impressed with how well put together the whole episode was.

I am so surprised its taken so many years for this manga to be adapted into an anime – it really is wonderfully written!

Also, congrats on getting the 2000th comment! XD
