Summer 2011 – First Impressions (Kamisama Dolls, Nyanpire!, Kaitou Tenshi Twin Angel Kyun Kyun Tokimeki Paradise)
So what did I watch/suffer through today? Mysterious singing robot summons, vampire cats and squeaky magical girls…….yeap that would be Kamisama Dolls, Nyanpire! and Kaitou Tenshi Twin Angel Kyun Kyun Tokimeki Paradise.
I really liked this first episode – so far its the best of the season for me. So much happens, but it just avoids feeling too rushed and I was completely drawn in from beginning to end. Right off the bat lots of things are firmly established and the general personalities of the main characters are made clear – not one minute of the episode was wasted; Kamisama Dolls seems to be completely aware that it has limited time to tell its story. For me the best thing about the episode was the villain. He’s deliciously psychotic – there is a very real sense of danger about him (lots of dead bodies kind of help) and thankfully he just manages to avoid becoming hammy. The main character is a touch bumbling and awkward, but thankfully doesn’t fall into the wailing loser every-lead category by actually having a bit of backbone. I’m slightly concerned by the fact the main character and his little sister have moved in with the love interest by the end of the episode – I’m fearing stupid romcom hijinks are going to ensue, however if the show continues to manage to strike a balance between humour and action right, this could be an excellent show.
On the production front things aren’t as good unfortunately. The animation is pretty poor – so many off model characters and those globular objects on the love interest’s chest in no way resemble breasts. The writing and excellent direction make up for the sucky animation a bit, but it’s still a pity. The OP on the other hand, is fantastic – love the animation used and the song is pretty decent too. ED is also great, I love Chiaki Ishikawa’s voice and playing the next episode preview in the ED frees up a little bit more time for squeezing stuff into the main episode. Voice acting is pretty good in the show too – remains to be seen how I will deal with loli imouto – she didn’t really talk much in this episode, so can’t judge how irritating she is yet. I also have to mention the sound design for the robot things – they ‘sing’ or at least make melodic noises when charging attacks, which I found pretty cool.
Definitely keeping Kamisama Dolls on, hope the rest of the series is as promising as this first episode.
So Gonzo’s resurrection show then. It turns out that Nyanpire will be short 5 minute episodes, of which 1/3 is taken up by the creepy live action ED/music video thing. As for the main episode itself – well this first episode wasn’t really great. Basically it covers how Nyanpire became Nyanpire in about a minute and dedicates the rest of the time to its search for food in the home of its owner. It was cute……..for about a minute, and then quickly became boring, hopefully once a few more characters get introduced the show won’t be so meh. I was hoping Nyanpire itself would be some awesome character, but now have the sneaking suspicion that it’s the least interesting character in the series. Of course only watching more episodes will tell (although in future I am avoiding that horrific ED).
Not really much to say about the production – it’s really simply animated, what you see is what you get. It’s all rather boring to look at really, the ‘oh look how cute it is!’ feeling lasted all of a few seconds for me (I’m not a cat person) and quickly became “does she have to put on that horrendous cutsey voice??” as the character started to talk.
So pretty much Bad Gonzo on first impressions – hopefully it will improve (not holding my breath though).
Kaitou Tenshi Twin Angel Kyun Kyun Tokimeki Paradise
This is a prime example of a show that makes me question my sanity in trying every new show each season. What a terrible experience this was. My gut reaction at preview was “oh fuck no” and that proved to be 100% correct – there is no force on earth that could convince me to try another episode of this. The thing that’s so terrible about this show is that it plays all the tropes straight – stuff that has been so done to death, it’s usually only used as omake parody material……unless they were trying to be funny and I completely missed it. Oh my, that’s a frightening thought. Yeah, I can’t think of anything else to say…….kind of run out of ways to say things are bad.
The most horrific and traumatising part of the episode is the OP. Holy god, I think my ears were about to start bleeding from the high-pitched squealing that was fed through my headphones (which are now broken….its all this show’s fault!) – I actually recoiled in horror. The ED isn’t as bad – not that that means its good, it’s just that nothing could be as bad as the OP. Voice acting is terrible; the only character that was halfway bearable was the villain’s sidekick, and even then he’s pretty crap.
So yeah, this was terrible – never, ever touching it again.
