Characters That Made My Year – SHINING SAOTOME~! (Twelve Days of Christmas: Day Five)

December 18, 2011

Now for something different!  We’re onto Day Five so it’s time for a character from a show that was one of my favourite Guilty Pleasures of the year – SHINING SAOTOME~! from Uta no Prince-sama: Maji Love 1000%

Woo SHINING SAOTOME~!  What a fantastic character.  Shining is completely one dimensional (just like all the characters in UtaPri) but he’s so hilariously OTT that he just steals any scene that he’s in!  I don’t have any deep or meaningful reason for including Shining in my 12 characters of the year – I just loved the camp hilarity he brought to an already camp as hell show!  UtaPri was a joy to watch, easily one of my favourites of the year simply because it was a ridiculous amount of fun and in no way took itself seriously (pity the 2nd half was a bit meh) – who doesn’t love multi-coloured bishies singing and dancing to cheesy J-Pop numbers!?

The main reason for my love of Shining in particular was his seiyuu – Emperor Wakamoto himself.  Wakamoto is a legend, just lending his voice to a character instantly makes them x100 more awesome than they already where.  With Shining, Wakamoto just goes all out and you can tell he’s just messing about having fun with the ridiculousness of the character & show – its brilliant.

The moment that I’ve picked for Shining is pretty damn obvious to anyone that’s seen UtaPri – nothing really tops Shining’s introduction to the show.  The man appears on the roof of the school building dressed in a robe & feathery mask before he swings down to the stage on wires for a brief dance number & inspirational speech, and then flies back off again.   It is genius and must be seen to be believed.

I don’t know, his intro was pretty damned awesome, but his hypnotism in episode 5 did it for me. That might just be because of all the prolonged, epic rolling of R’s, though. 😛

‘Srowry, deep brething… srowry… srow and srow, srowwwwwwry, srowry…’

I think it’d work quite well on me.

Hahahaha~! Ep5 was so much lulz I almost forgot about that hypnotism scene! Hilarious.
