Winter 2012: First Impressions (Zero no Tsukaima F, High School DxD and Brave 10)
Fanservice edition today~! The latest installment of the Original Shana Clones adventures in Hogwarts, boobs and bishies…..or Zero no Tsukaima F, High School DxD and Brave 10.
Zero no Tsukaima F (s4)
So it’s pretty much business as usual for the Original Shana Clone show. ZnT wastes no time getting right into a new arc……which was confusing because I can’t actually remember what happened in S3 so spent the majority of the episode glazed eyed with very little idea what was going on. Not that this is unusual when watching ZnT – it’s a conditioned reflex now to completely zone out when watching shows like this. It’s kind of amazing how little progress the characters have made in four seasons – sure Saito & Louise are a bit more open with each other, but basically they’re still stuck in that abusive tsundere phase permanently, with Saito being easily led astray by the other haremettes. The comedy in this series brings the words ‘beating a dead horse’ to mind.
Production seems decent enough – pretty by the numbers, no real effort has been put into the direction. Voice cast is all back – Rei Kugimiya is in here tsundere element. Music was……you know I can’t actually remember what the OP & ED where like……hmmmm.
So I’m watching this out of habit – it’s not too awful and at least they are making some effort to have a proper ‘fate of the world’ plot rather than just episodic harem hijinks. It could have been worse!
High School DxD
This could have been so much worse than it was……..but it could also have been so much better. I was fighting deja-vu throughout the entire episode, as High School DxD is basically like Kore wa Zombie Desu ka? with more nipples & less comedy…….or like Itsuka Tenma no Kurousagi with less multi-coloured character designs and more uncensored blood. In the show’s favour is the fact it really isn’t pretending to be anything other than an excuse to fill the screen with boobs, boobs, action & blood……and more boobs. There is also very little annoying censorship – the blinding white bar of light only made an appearance once (apparently we can have extreme close-ups of nipples, but bums are a no-no), which is actually refreshing in a medium saturated with titles featuring horrendously censored fanservice. However that doesn’t really distract from the fact that this is yet another extremely shallow show, featuring a Bland Male Lead (and in this case a complete pervert) being brought back to life by a cute girl.
Production is decent – there is some good direction and nice backgrounds. Voice acting does the job, music is pretty decent and overall it’s a nice enough looking show. With lots of boobs.
If you like your fanservice shows you could do a lot worse than this. However it’s really not my cup of tea – if there was a bit more off wall comedy or an awesome male lead I’d consider watching this (I did enjoy KoreZom & Ichiban Ushiro no Daimaou after all), however High School DxD is a bit too much by the numbers for me and I have no real love of watching boobs (have some of my own thanks). Dropped.
I was going to watch this anyway since I enjoy the odd shallow reverse harem show every now and then, so I’m pleasantly surprised by how watchable this turned out to be! There has been actual effort put into the writing and the acting is pretty good, but the major plus point is the female lead, who doesn’t immediately piss me off even though she is a quintessential damsel in distress. The set up has been done a million times before so how enjoyable this show is will depend entirely on how interesting the characters and action is. Signs are good in this first episode, lets hope they keep this level going.
Studio Sakimakura are a new studio, but the animation is pretty good, and the action scenes were interesting enough to watch. The voice cast is excellent – thankfully they seem to be putting a bit of effort into things. Daisuke Ono voices the lead and also sings the OP (which is decent enough). The ED is some horrible autotuned shite that will never be listened to again.
So I’m quite pleased with Brave 10 – nothing quite like some reverse harem fun to keep things balanced on the old watching list!
