Characters That Made My Year – Literary Girl (The Twelve Days of Christmas: Day Three)

December 16, 2012

Keeping things going with one of the years most memorable side characters from one of the best comedies of the year – Literary Girl from The Daily Lives of High School Boys.

Everything about Nichibros appealed to me, the whole series was just amusing.  However the segments with the Literary Girl were just genius.  She isn’t a developed character in the show; it’s more her affect on Hidenori and her own awesome reactions to everything at made Literary Girl’s segments so much fun.  Each encounter between Hidenori & Literary Girl escalated the awkwardness and ridiculousness, until it turned into a slapstick chase scene – amazing how they got to that point after the initial “the wind is crying” conversation.

My favourite encounter is the one where in her increasingly flustered state, Literary Girl ends up falling on Hidenori, and he eventually ends up accidentally knocking her out & abandoning her by the riverside.  The way there is only really Hidenori’s rambling monologue to accompany Literary Girls increasingly bizarre & desperate flailing about in the background, made this segment hilarious.  Gotta love Nichibros, it was great fun!

Definitely my favourite character of the show. I watched this show in a Skype group right after Guilty Crown, and this was always the perfect way to get my mood back up.

Ah Comedy Hour was the best way to experience NichiBros (and Guilty Crown, nothing quite like sharing the pain) – I loved those calls!

Everyone loves Literature Girl – definitely best Nichibros character, and this is amazing considering how much screentime she had.

Come to think of it, Nichibros had some really powerful side characters – the chibi school president and her “delinquent” counterparts, the bully schoolgirls, all of them were a lot more interesting than the main trio.

NichiBros was weird in that it was it’s handful of minor female side characters that stole the show – they were really great and gave the male characters a lot to react to. And amusingly the bitchiness of the girls in Nichibros is much more realistic than depictions of high school girls in other shows where they are the focus! XD
