Autumn 2014: First Impressions – World Trigger, Magic Kaito 1412 and Cross Ange
Things are starting to come out in bulk now, but there still isn’t much I can get excited about…..this season is really slow to get going. Next up is barely animated unexciting shounen, dated magic tricks and What the Actual Fuck Sunrise!? – World Trigger, Magic Kaito 1412 and Cross Ange: Rondo of Angels and Dragons.
This was actually shocking in how poorly fired together it was – I feel so sorry for the manga fans who were excited for this show. Toei clearly could not give a flying fuck about World Trigger and barely put any effort into this adaptation. There is a remarkable lack of actual animation going on for this première episode with a huge amount of static shots and panning – it just feels incredibly lazy! What little animation there is suffers from so much derpy quality that it’s almost laughable – not even the OP is all that well put together. And just to hammer the nail in, the acting is also crap – like the cast decided that since the studio couldn’t be arsed putting effort into World Trigger, they wouldn’t either. Everyone sounds like they’d much rather be anywhere else……which was pretty much how I felt watching the damn show.
The sad thing is that the actual concept is something I’d normally be fairly interested in – I like the whole alien attackers from another world thing going on. But yeah, this adaptation is so shite it’s pretty depressing. Might give the manga a look instead – dropped.
Magic Kaito 1412
So this was alright – nothing majorly wrong, but felt quite dated. Not just the character designs, but things like the whole panties harassment and attitude of the teacher in the opening scenes – it just felt like stuff that was pretty common in much older series. The actual meat of the story showing Kaito discovering his Dad’s secret identity and deciding to inherit the phantom thief business, was all enjoyable enough, but really not my kind of thing – I’ve never really had any urge to try Detective Conan either.
Not great, not terrible – just middle of the road. Not for me so it’s dropped.
Cross Ange: Rondo of Angels and Dragons
So this was a thing Sunrise thought was a good idea to create and unleash on the world. Sometimes I wonder what Sunrise are thinking. Cross Ange is a terrible show, but is has so much trainwreck potential that I just have to watch more of it. The concept of subtlety is entirely alien to Cross Ange – it likes to bludgeon you over the head with its themes so that you have no choice but to burn the images of infants in cages, scantily clad ladies riding motorcycle mecha things & shooting down dragons and a princess being anally violated into your memory.
I mean thematically I get what they are going for – Ange needs to be completely broken down from being a bigoted, pampered princess and rebuilt as a heroic dragon-slaying character, but they could have done so with a lighter touch. Having our main character take in the scene of a mother desperately trying to keep her ‘Norma’ baby daughter and start preaching about why the baby is a monster and inhuman trash does nothing to really endear Ange to us. Sure karma turns round and bites her hard when Ange finds out she’s ‘Norma’ herself, but having this haughty princess stripped and violated just makes for extremely uncomfortable viewing rather than garner any meaningful sympathy for her. Then there is a obviously evil Prince with his uncomfortable perving on his unconscious wheelchair bound loli imouto…….yeah that sort of happened. There is just so much going on in this episode that it is hard to mention it all!
On the production front – well, sure is a lot of tits & ass. Really not keen on the costume designs, but the fight mode mechas are pretty decent (flight mode is just odd – why motorcycle themed with the pilot exposed??) Also that is such a recycled Gundam SEED Destiny OP (Ange even looks a bit like Stellar and there’s a Jesus Yamato clone in the OP too). Ange will also be singing a lot since she’s voiced by Nana Mizuki – gotta make the most of the woman’s talent after all!
So yes, Cross Ange is probably one of the worse shows to air yet, but I’m morbidly curious about how far down this awful rabbit hole the show will go, so I’m watching more. I am terrible human being.
