Characters that made my year – Slaine Troyard (The 12 Days of Anime: Day 4)

December 17, 2014

12daysofchristmasHave had a soul destroying evening of attempting to sell designer handbags to indecisive arseholes and setting up my technologically challenged mother’s new phone.  I need something to lift my mood, and what better entertainment is there than watching Slaine Troyard from Aldnoah.Zero suffer!?

Slaine.Troyard.full.1742132For all its flaws I really enjoyed watching Aldnoah.Zero and am very much looking forward to the continuation in January.  It is exactly the type of ridiculous show I love since it revels in torturing its characters, and the character that went through the most suffering is probably Slaine.  Poor, poor Slaine – he’s so cute and all he wants is to stay by his Princess’s side, but the world (and writing staff) is conspiring against him!  Slaine constantly finds himself in awful situations – he is the very image of a kicked puppy, and I bloody loved watching him slowly break.

It all really started to really go horribly wrong for Slaine in episode 8, in which he was strung up and tortured until everyone realised his loyalty to Asseylum was absolute……and then they all died.  Which just about sums up every situation Slaine seems to find himself in – just when things appear to be taking a turn for the better, they get worse instead.  And I for one really loved watching each twist of the knife – here’s hoping Slaine continues to be a beacon of suffering well into the 2nd season!

I have no idea what to expect in the upcoming season, but I certainly hope Slaine catches a break by the end. Usually, series which start with misfortune for the hero end by giving him a happy ending. It is rare to find an author willing to torture his main character until the bitter end.

I sort of want Slaine to suffer more……he’s like the new Suzaku except more adorable.
