Characters that made my year – Akira Midousuji (The 12 Days of Anime: Day 5)

December 18, 2014

12daysofchristmasMore shounen sports anime and this time it’s one of the antagonists that make the list – the incredibly twisted Akira Midousuji from Yowamushi Pedal!

Midousuji.Akira.full.1696553I had to include someone from YowaPeda.  While its cast and production values may not have been quite as pretty as Haikyuu’s, YowaPeda still has a lot of heart and some great biking action to enjoy.  However what I really liked most about YowaPeda was the introduction of a real tangible antagonist in the form of the super competitive Midousuji.  Midousuji is willing to do anything to win just short of actual cheating.  He manipulates his team-mates like pawns, he lies to opponents to throw them off their game, and is just generally unpleasant to everyone all the time!  But what really strikes you about Midousuji is his twistedness – as in the literal contortions he puts his body through!

Midousuji seems to be made up entirely of joints and the anime has this disturbing sound-effect for him that just makes all his jerky, unnerving movements even more repellent.  He is a entirely unpleasant individual…….but then Grande Road decided to explore his backstory and have him have chat with our adorable Onoda, and suddenly Midousuji isn’t as horrible any more.  And that is just fine too!  However I still enjoy Midousuji most when he is being the biggest dick to everyone around him – like his proper introduction in episode 22 when he publicly insults Imaizumi.  Gotta love how unrepentantly awful Midousuji can be – look at that gleeful grin!

I have the craziest love-hate feelings for him. On one hand, I want to hug him and talk to him about everything, but on the other hand, I want to take a baseball bat to his face😄

But hey! It just makes it all the more delicious when he loses! This guy made my year too😄
