Characters that made my year – Rumi Yokoi (The 12 Days of Anime: Day 9)

December 22, 2014

12daysofchristmasNow for another rare female character that made it into my favourites – Rumi Yokoi from Tonari no Seki-kun.

yokoi rumiTonari no Seki-kun was a brilliant comedy series.  It made wonderful use of its short running time to show-case self contained skits that never failed to get a laugh out of me – quite an achievement given how repetitive Tonari no Seki-kun is by its very nature.  Despite Seki-kun being in the title of the show, it is really Yokoi who is the main character – she completely carries the show.  Seki may be doing the elaborate set-pieces, but it is Yokoi’s reactions that make the show so much fun to watch – this was a real display of Kana Hanazawa’s talent as a seiyuu.

It is endearing to see Yokoi try so hard to pay attention to the teacher and get some work done, only to be sucked into Seki’s antics again and again.  As she gets more and more worked up, she begins to intervene in Seki’s games – like in the shoji battle in episode 8.  Yokoi’s imagination is just as vivid as Seki’s and when she doesn’t like the direction he is taking the game, Yokoi feels utterly compelled to get involved – taking things every bit as seriously as Seki.  Such a simple but fun show – a real highlight of the year.

Yokoi is a great character and even more fun to read about in the manga. In one chapter, she basically admits that she expects Seki to entertain her with his antics. xD Yokoi’s commentary is what makes the show great. I especially loved the episode where she evaluates Seki’s knitting technique.

I totally did not expect Yayoi to fight back! Sometimes I think Seki is too childish, tat yayoi manages to trick him! BUt lols, he’s formidable in his own way.
