Characters that made my year – Akane Tsunemori (The 12 Days of Anime: Day 11)
Okay so I may have ended up extremely disappointed with Psycho-Pass 2 but Akane was awesome. Self-assured, decisive and with great leadership skills, Akane was the only character in Psycho-Pass 2 that didn’t suffer from the awful writing. Sure she ended up being a touch too perfect (especially in contrast with her incompetent colleagues), and seemed to have access to the script, but that could not undo the solid character development she already had from season 1.
I really liked how Akane tries to work within the Sybil System, using the established rules and twisting them to comply with her own sense of justice. With her knowledge of the true from of Sybil she is never content to sit back and blindly follow orders and constantly challenges Sybil through Kasei, demanding explanations for their increasingly erratic decisions. But Akane always stops short of outright rebellion against the system because she acknowledges that there are no viable alternatives at present.
Between seasons Akane gains more confidence in her actions, making snap decisions on the hop, delegating jobs to suit people’s skills and never flinching away from fighting on the front lines, winning the respect and loyalty of her subordinates (and the scorn of her colleagues). Episode 6 best shows her new skill set as she gets right into the action against the rogue drones and quickly adapts her plan as new information comes in. In a disappointing sequel, Akane was the brightest star.
