Characters that made my year – Tarou Takanashi (12 Days of Anime: Day 4)

December 17, 2015

And now for a character I ended up doing a complete 180° on over the course of the series, Tarou Takanashi from SHIROBAKO.

SHIROBAKO was a gem of a show with a wealth of characters to choose from, but I went with the office idiot Tarou. When we first meet Tarou in SHIROBAKO everyone who has ever worked in an office environment immediately had traumatic flashbacks to the most stressful situations imaginable – everyone has met a Tarou in their working life at some stage…maybe you’ve even been The Tarou yourself! The Tarou is that work colleague who always seems to be fucking up and causing more work for you, and yet The Tarou will constantly talk as if they are the best thing since sliced bread……..this is despite their utter inability to meet any deadline ever.

Yes, The Tarou is a character we are all intimately acquainted with and someone we really hate dealing with – hence my immediate dislike of Tarou Takanashi when we first meet him. However as the series went on, and we got to know Tarou better he really started to become endearing to me. Tarou may be pretty incompetent and has some delusions of grandeur, but there’s no harm in him and he’s genuinely excited to be working in an industry he’s passionate about – god love him, he does try! This is especially apparent when we saw Tarou contrasted with the jaded Hiraoka. Both characters cause problems for their colleagues, but Tarou is more of a loveable idiot, whereas Hiraoka is smart & capable but just half-asses things because he doesn’t see the point of straining himself any more. The episode where the two go out and get blind drunk was one of my favourites in a consistently excellent show. Yeap, I did enjoy watching Tarou – would still hate to work with him though!

Could be worse. You could be working with the focus character from that anime production episode of Paranoia Agent. Although considering he got murdered at the end of that episode, you wouldn’t have to be working with him forever.

Murder isn’t really a socially accepted way to get rid of awful work colleagues unfortunately 😦

The thing was I hated Tarou to start with too! But as the show went on he got more loveable and entertaining to watch – I ended up really liking him!

That annoying guy?! So… yeah, I pretty much remember him with an ugly aftertaste. I don’t know but I didn’t hate him though. What a dork. If I am going to pick a character in Shirobako that I like, it would be Zuka-chan. The struggle was real in her case.

Zuka’s story was very compelling – really made you want to cheer her on. Still, I really liked watching the gormless Tarou make everyone’s lives difficult – but there were so many characters in Shirobako to choose from it was hard to just pick one.
