Characters that made my year – Matsuno sextuplets (12 Days of Anime: Day 6)

December 19, 2015

And we’ve reached the midway point! I’m incredibly hungover so this is going to be very short – good thing the Matsuno sextuplets from Osomatsu-san aren’t particularly complex to write about!

I honestly didn’t think Osomatsu-san would be worth watching given it’s based on a 60s manga series. Even though I loved the parody laden 1st episode, I still initially dropped the show because I didn’t think the humour would hold up in the later episodes. But damn was I ever wrong! After hearing lots of positive chatter about subsequent episodes I picked the series back up again, and now it is among my favourites of the season.

The characters are great. Each of the sextuplets and the quirky supporting cast have their own unique personalities and catch-phrases, and the staff are having a blast writing weird and wonderful sketches for them – you can tell they are having a lot of fun making this show. If you haven’t checked the show out yet I’d definitely recommend it – it has me in fits of laughter quite often, and can even manage to be very heartwarming at times too. Great show, I’m so pleased it is continuing into the new year.

I almost completely passed this series by as well, but I’m really glad I watched it and ended up sticking around – it’s easily become one of my highlights of the entire season. Just out of curiosity, do you have a particular favourite sextuplet?

Ah I meant to do a current ranking of the sextuplets – stupid hungover brain.
Currently it stands at: Choromatsu > Ichimatsu > Karamatsu > Juushimatsu > Osomatsu > Todomatsu
But I do enjoy all the brothers – they’re really fun to watch bounce off each other.

Yeah, the brothers wouldn’t any anywhere near as good individually if they couldn’t also function as a unit. The whole dysfunctional family thing is where some of the very best comedy of the series is for me. As for me though, Karamatsu’s been my favourite ever since he walked into Totoko’s room looking like he was about to star in a retro porno, complete with tacky gold chain and oversized glass of wine.

That Karamatsu scene was pure gold. Any reminder of his ridiculously tacky taste in clothing is a joy.

I like how neurotic the sextuplets are.

They can be utterly deranged at times

More importantly, when are these sextuplets sober? I think they’re drunk for most of the time which made me enjoy this anime despite its cultural barriers. HAHAHAHA. Anyway, that’s a good thing. Cannot say for the other side characters though.

Being unemployed leaves lots of time for drunken shenanigans! Would love to know how they afford it…..although they mostly seem to mooch off Chibita’s goodwill…..
