Characters that made my year – Takehito “Gakuto” Morokuzu (12 Days of Anime: Day 10)
In the home stretch now, so today let’s look at a character I was a bit all over the place about, before deciding he made the show – Takehito “Gakuto” Morokuzu from Prison School.
When I first started watching Prison School I wasn’t immediately sold on the show. I had heard it was common to either love the series or hate it, but rather than have any strong emotion towards the show, I was pretty ambivalent – I could have easily dropped it. I initially stuck with Prison School out of morbid fascination – the OTT reactions, situations and character designs were something a bit different – but quickly started to really enjoy the show, mainly due to the hilariously overblown fanservice and the weird situations our main characters seem to find themselves in.
I was torn between choosing the grotesquely proportioned, sweaty, yet endearing, Vice-President and Gakuto, but ultimately went for our self-sacrificing bro. Gakuto sort of annoyed me to start since he has an antiquated speech pattern and seems to constantly be in a state of excitement that necessitates shouting all his dialogue. However his role as the ‘brains’ of the outfit and the wonderfully elaborate schemes he comes up with (often including some him making some horrendous sacrifice of his human dignity) are what made Prison School so entertaining to watch.
