Characters that made my year – Jean Pierre Polnareff (The 12 Days of Anime: Day 7)

December 20, 2014

12daysofchristmasBit of a change today as I took a shine to a comedy side character in the form of Jean Pierre Polnareff from Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure: Stardust Crusaders.

polnareffDespite my massive hype coming off the back of Battle Tendency, I didn’t like Stardust Crusaders as much as I thought I would.  The slower pacing and the fact I still prefer Joseph Joestar over his grandson Jotaro even though Joseph is now an old man, are the main reasons.  But there is still lots of great things to enjoy in Stardust Crusaders – Polnareff being one of them.

Polnareff may have a tragic dead imouto backstory which drove him on a quest for revenge, but he’s still the butt-monkey of Stardust Crusaders.  Polnareff is an idiot and the rest of the group know that and tend to make a fool out of him, all culminating in letting Polnareff think he had gotten Avdol killed….which was actually pretty damn mean.  Polnareff also has the worst luck with bathrooms – which in itself is hilarious.  Who can forget the pig-toilet in episode 10 or the harrowing experience Enya put him through in episode 15 with the zombie baby!?  Dude has probably developed a phobia of bathrooms at this stage.

But yeah, Polnareff is today’s pick because he is comedy gold most of the time….oh and I quite like his Stand – Silver Chariot is pretty cool looking.

Having read the manga way beforehand, I could tell the pre-Stardust Crusaders hype wouldn’t be good for anyone. Shame Old Man Joseph and Polnareff were the only consistently cool cats of the bunch.

It was hard not to get massively hyped coming off the back of Battle Tendency – I was aware that Stardust Crusaders was a fan favourite so was expecting it to be even more exciting than the previous series. Ah well, it is still a fun show.
